Eye watch HBO
24 OctThe HBO logo is one that achieves a simple, yet effective balance. The use of the blue color is very calming, and appeals to both males and females. I think this was a good choice because as we discussed in class blue is the most appealing color to both sexes.
The modern, simple font does not overcomplicate the lettering which makes it very readable. It is thick but still spread out, except for small areas between the B and the O. This creates a sense of unity so the logo did not like awkwardly spaced out.
The unique aspect to this logo is the eye that is hidden with the O. This is perfect for a company that is based on television shows because it is supposed to be focused on the viewers. Having an eye hidden within their logo makes it seem like the logo is looking at you, the same way you would look at the t.v. show by HBO.
“Talking” couldn’t be linked better
23 OctTalkmore, a wholesaler for cellphones, uses a clever and simple logo that incorporates its visual within its text making it visually striking and smart. This logo also connects to our lecture on Semiotics this week because it uses quotation marks, a universal symbol for talking, to replace the a and the e. The a and e are striking symbols that show what this company is all about: talking. The design could have easily used quotation marks on the outside of talkmore, but this would have neither been creative nor using visual tools like talking symbols to their advantage.
By using a modern, block-like, sans serif typeface, the light blue quotation marks easily stand out from the black text and really capture the simplicity of using visuals within text by illustrating talking with semiotics.
I love this logo because its one of the minimal creative ones that makes you hope that I will too someday be able to be so subtly smart when it comes to designing logos.
the nba is ballin
22 OctThe NBA logo definitely makes the text work with the visual. I love how the player is dribbling around the text. The visual hierarchy makes our eyes go directly to the logo. I think this logo works really well because it is so recognizable. There is no question as to what NBA represents. I think it also uses color very well. The white color of the NBA is vibrant against the blue while also strongly linking the player to the text again.
Not Lost In Space
22 OctThe European Space Agency utilizes a logo that successfully combines both type and visual. The lowercase, sans serif type presents the company as modern and current. The visual takes advantage of several gestalt principles including closure and the figure/ground relationship. The curved blue lines create a sphere on the background, which could resemble a planet in the solar system. The white circle next to the “e” could also be taken as a planet in orbit. Our eye naturally completes the form so we see the sphere even though its just blue lines on a simple white background. The blue contrasts nicely with the white to create a simple but successful logo.
That’s Bull
22 OctMerrill Lynch is a company that works with the stock market. The choice of the bull in the logo relates nicely to the function of the company because of the idea of a bull market benefitting the investor. The bull uses line as tone, so the idea of a bull is conveyed but in a much simpler way. The simplicity allows the logo to be used in many ways, as we saw with the saturn logo. The words of the logo are slightly thicker than the line used in the rendering of the bull, but they tie in well because the strength of the typeface matches the strength of the bull.
This logo has no color, but I think that works nicely because it keeps it simpler. Bulls are often black, so having a black bull on a white background ties back into that idea. The use of just one color in the logo means that if the company wishes, it can make the logo in any color it would like.
I think the Quiznos Logo successfully combines its visual and type in several ways. For one, the big “Q” at the top shows gestalt by matching the colors of the two words below. Though it is clearly an independent design because it is a different “Q” than the one used in Quiznos.
Also, I think that Q could be seen to represent a sandwich. This may or may not be what the designers intended, but it is kind of the right shape and maybe it works on a subconscious
level. This would work perfectly for Quiznos because they want people to see their name and instantly think of sandwiches, its their business.
